Finding Reason plays Rocbar!! Never thought we'd make it here. A hobby has turned into something a little more. I want to say thanks to all those that came out to see us play. Most of my close friends and several new friends came out just for us. I'm confident that more of you would've been there had you not been busy working. Having my friends there, really made the show enjoyable for me. The band was pleasantly surprised and we enjoyed playing the show. We hope that you enjoyed it.

The 6 song, 30 minute set was really a blur. It happened so fast and then it was over. As far as the performance was concerned, there were a few mistakes here and there...most were not obvious, but there was one that i butchered. Good news is that I don't think there was any video or audio of that song...But i was fairly satisfied with the performance.

I don't remember being all that nervous about the show. I guess I was nervous about other things. The set up and tear down are quite nerve wracking times. It's a race to get everything ready and then get everything off the stage before the next band. That is the least enjoyable part of the process. we need roadies...

After the tear down is when we get to mingle with the fans. It was great to see you all and I felt a little like a rockstar. But no one asked for my autograph. :P
At any rate, the show was a success and we did get paid. I haven't spent my $15 yet, but i've got my eye on a sporty little number... haha.

Well, here we go, all you music fans...



To Finding Reason this show will be the "big time". Depending on how you look at things, this is our first real gig...paying gig that is. Although at this point, i'm not terribly concerned about getting paid. I just want to put on a good show and make new fans.

If you'd like to attend the show, I can get you discounted advance tickets. Nine dollars is the price. Even though it is a school night, we go on fairly early (~ 8pm) and will play a 30 minutes set. So there is time to grab dinner at The Hard Rock Cafe and then catch a Finding Reason show...and still make it home in time for bed at a reasonable hour...albeit with your ears ringin' ;)

Hazel

You know those silly forms that you have to fill out every once in a while? You know, those forms that ask personal questions. How often do your answers change? With the exception of your age and weight, not much changes. The next time I get to fill out one of those forms, i'll get to change something. My eye color.

Today, i had an eye appointment. My peepers are healthy although my vision changed a bit. And officially my eye color changed from brown to hazel. For 33 years my eyes have been brown...although i always suspected that they weren't just brown. Depending on my mood or my clothing my eyes go from brown to green.

So, i somewhat look forward to that next form which asks for eye color...hazel it is.

Finding Reason Show #2

Last night Finding Reason performed our second public show.



I will say that this show went much better than the first. I actually felt pretty good with the performance and had some fun. There are still some issues that i need t work out, but more practice will work that out. And since i was fresh off of my Russian tour, i thought i was going to be very rusty...but all went smooth enough. In fact we got a lot good compliments. Although, it's hard to tell if people are just being polite. We were supposed to play with other bands from our genre, but that didn't happen. Again, we played with a heavy metal crowd.

We were told that we were the best band last night...that's a great compliment. I hope it was true. We also had the most fans present of any of the bands.

We were supposed to go on 3rd in the lineup, but the first 2 bands canceled. That meant we had to open the show. We didn't want to go on early since fans knew we were going on later...so we delayed as much as we could.

As of this writing there are no more shows scheduled. We are taking the month of October off for personal reasons. We might have another show before the end of Sept. There isn't much that you haven't already seen, but here are a few memories.

I don't have time to label any of the pictures right now, but one day i'll get to it, maybe. Pictures include Red Square, Kremlin wall, Moscow river, monuments at Victory Park, monuments at VDNKh park, and the International Military Music Festival event in Red Square. This was a celebration for the 862nd birthday of Moscow. The festival was quite entertaining and a delight for my last night in Moscow. It helps that those memories are celebrated with good friends.

I've been busy trying to recoup from the Russian variant of the swine flu (not really...it was just a cold) and getting ready for Finding Reason's next gig (which was last night).

I hope to have something up here for you to review...but to be safe, don't hold your breath...

40 Years!

I haven't the time to write a full blog on this subject for i am involved in my own little space mission. And i'm not sure that i could do very much justice. I have a difficult time expressing my feelings (especially for things i am passionate about), so the words could never do justice to my feelings. But this is what fuels my heart for my career.

Do you recall this date in history 40 years ago? Where were you?

Nine Going on Ten

Yesterday was my 9th anniversary working in the space business. It's hard to believe that it's been that long. I've seen quite a bit during my time here...and I've learned a lot too. I've made a lot of friends (here and 5000 miles away in Russia). Those friends are probably the dearest to me. I've been privileged to participate in many historic events here. Each day is another historic milestone. I've been privileged to actually lead some of those historic milestones. Not too shabby.

The job in itself is still interesting and challenging. It is still fun...to a certain degree. I will admit that things have been a bit more challenging (that's my PCness there) over the last year or two.

But I must remember that i am one of a select few that can do the job that i do...and that makes it even more intriguing. And that is probably what keeps me going...

I wonder what the next nine will bring??

We're working on lining up some gigs for your pleasure. We had a good one lined up, but a scheduling conflict has sidelined us for the time being. Hopefully, we'll play a show for you sometime this summer.

JenFest 2009!!

JenFest 2009 was an overwhelming success! At last count, we nearly tripled the donations from last year's JenFest with an amazing total of more than $3300. Two charities (ASPCA and JDRF) will benefit from the hard work put forth by all those that contributed their time and talent to make the show a success.

Also a big thanks goes out to all those that donated and/or attended the show. Your support for the cause and for the bands is truly appreciated! Thank you! Yes, it was HOT and the mosquitoes were relentless...but everyone seemed to have a good time. Perhaps next year we'll be in an air-conditioned environment.

My day started about 4 hours before the show with loading up equipment and helping with setup. My day didn't end until about 3 hours after the show with unloading equipment and cleanup. It was a very long day...but worthy of the causes.

Additionally, a super big thanks goes out to Mark, the owner of the property that we used. He was gracious enough to allow us to play there and provided us with a nice venue with plenty of parking and lawn seating. Maybe there will be more shows there in the future.

Speaking of shows, if you stayed for the entire duration of the festival, you may have heard where Finding Reason will be playing in the near future. The date has been confirmed, July 15th. I won't tell you where just yet, i'll let you watch the video to find that little tid bit of information. Don't worry...if you don't have time to find it, check back here for the updates.

The Show Must Go On

A quick look at the weather forecast for Saturday is looking good. Partly cloudy with a high of 86...should be no rain as this is dry air from a cold front. Awesome.

Now, on to the not so bad news, but not so great news...Finding Reason will play this saturday at JenFest. However, we don't know who is going to be the talent on the skins. It looks as though we may not be able to debut our new drummer. His job may prevent him from making an appearance. We're a bit bummed. However, we do have a backup plan. We called on our old friend Ron, and he is willing to step up and fill the bill. If Ron does step up, we'll do a smaller set of songs. So, Finding Reason will play. We just don't know when...there might be a schedule change.

Unfortunately, we may not be able to get the website updated real-time. The good news is that a test has already been done on the webcast and it worked well. I'm quite sure we'll be making announcements throughout the festival with the upcoming bands...so you can catch those announcements on the web.

It's Getting Hot

...and i'm not just talking about the weather.
Finding Reason is starting to put the word out that we are available for public consumption. We have at least one and possibly a second gig coming up this summer. The first one will be at The Pitt in Pasadena (our second rehearsal space). The second might be a bit more local. At this time i won't reveal the location of the second place...mostly cause i'm not 100% sure where we'd be playing. At any rate, both locations will be at public venues.

As always, you'll get the up-to-date scoop here. The nervousness is starting to creep in...but it's a rush...

I know you are wondering how the heck i stumbled across this word? Well, it started out in a very long meeting at work. Several of my co-workers noticed the lady across the table was wearing some sort of clown broach. It was a little disturbing. And we somehow got on the topic of phobias...fear of clowns (Coulrophobia, by the way). Well, Melissa G. went searching for a phobia list...and this is what we found:

Imprisoned

Confined. Trapped. Restricted. Stuck.

This is how i felt this morning. On my way to work, i must go through the garage. I do my usual routine and the garage door only lifted about 6 inches. Odd. WTH? Second attempt yielded the same results. Nada. I disconnected the door from the automatic opener and tried to open the door myself. Didn't budge. I look up to see this:



A closer look:



What you are looking at, folks, is a torsional spring...a broken torsional spring to be exact. The torsional spring helps lift the door. The door is incredibly heavy and the spring helps the garage door opener (whether a machine or man) open the garage door.

As soon as i saw the broken spring, i knew i was trapped. And, inside the garage was Delilah. She wouldn't budge until this was fixed. Straight to the internet to find some garage repair service to save me from my imprisonment. I support local when possible and i just picked a local Friendswood company, Allied Garage Doors.

The gentleman on the other side of the line said that he could have a repair man fix that no problem. However, he may be able to get to it before lunch, but after lunch is more likely. I was supposed to give a student a checkout this morning...sent a few emails to let my management and the student know my plight.

Now, what to do with my time. Well, i finally got around to doing some chores that i have been putting off. But luckily, George the garage door repair man was able to get here in the morning.

George was friendly and knowledgeable. He made some recommendations and without hesitation i accepted those recommendations. I enjoyed talking with George and he gave me some hints to keep the garage door operating smoothly for many years to come. Once a month or every other month spray some WD40 on the tosion rod bearings and roller bearings.

My garage door now has a stealth mode...it is nearly silent. I was very pleased with George's workmanship and kindness. If you are looking for some garage door repair work, i recommend Allied Garage Doors. Make sure you ask for George to be your repair man.

Freedom...

Four of Seven

I received my last flight assignments today. Of the seven remaining shuttle flights to the ISS, i will be taking part in 4 of those. Here are the remaining flights and my participation in those:

1) 2J/A -- off
2) 17A -- off
3) ULF3 -- supporting from Moscow (November-ish)
4) 20A -- my next lead flight (February '10)
5) 19A -- supporting as Team 4 (Team 4 attends meetings and is used as an additional body during the flight) (March '10?)
6) ULF4 -- off
7) ULF5 -- backroom support (May/June '10?)

It's quite surreal to think of the end of the shuttle program. It'll be somewhat somber and perhaps a little bittersweet to see the end of the program. It will be an honor to finish out the program.

But the good news is that the ISS will continue to fly even after the end of next year. We will just move on to the next program...eventually.

My Part Is Done

I am waking up from a short 3 hour nap. What a nap in the middle of the morning, you say? For the past 10 days or so i've been working the dreaded overnight hours for the current mission to the ISS. So, the nap was necessary in making an effort to get back to normal sleeping hours. I am very groggy right now.

For those about to rock...

"Foot Soldiers of Space"

Today at work, my division got the opportunity to hear the one and only Mr. Gene Kranz speak on "Failure is Not an Option". The man is an excellent speaker and his passion for manned space flight is still very prevalent in his speech. Mr. Kranz took us through his career including the now famous Apollo 13 experience. Pretty nifty stuff.

This is not the first time i've seen Gene give a speech in person. Several years ago, my company invited him to some talk at one of our awards banquets. Mr. Kranz and I arrived at the same time and i was able to chat with him for the short walk to the function. And as a surprise we received autographed copies of his new book, "Failure Is Not an Option".

Anyway...back to the title of the post. In the question and answer session following the speech today, one young flight controller asked how would you educate the public about the importance of NASA? The question was actually worded differently, but you get the idea. Mr. Kranz responded that it starts with the "foot soldiers of space"...those that are passionate about space...those that work in the space business...go out and talk to the community and spread the passion. From there it will perpetuate to the masses.

It's no secret that i'm passionate about the job i do...and i'll talk to you about it for hours if you let me.

2009 Houston Rodeo Run

Yesterday, several of us ran the ConocoPhillips Houston Rodeo Run. Earlier in the week the temperatures were in the low 80s. During the run, the temparature was in the low 60s...with a nasty biting wind. Effectively, the running partner and i improved our times (of course we only ran slightly less than 1/2 of a 1/2 marathon). It was expected that our times would improve.

I didn't think this run was as fun as the Houston 1/2 marathon. Supposedly there were 10000 runners between the 5k and the 10k race. We spent most of the time dodging slow(er) runners/walkers. It was like a mad game of Frogger.

Name that Node!!

Here's your chance to pick a name for NASA's last US module to be added to the International Space Station. This so happens to be the cargo on my next lead flight. 20A/STS-130 is my next lead flight and is scheduled to fly in Feb. of 2010.

Horelica House of Music -- Edition 27

I just happen to be flippin' through the channels and i came across a special on Weezer on the MHD channel. Of course, i immediately thought of HHoM and wondered if i had ever highlighted this group. Turns out that i hadn't...so without further ado, here is a nifty little album from the guys of Weezer.



And while wondering what other band that i may have not highlighted before, i realized that i hadn't done this band either. Wow...how did i miss this one? This band was my closest brush with rockstardom. Many years ago, while waiting in line to see these guys i started a conversation with the couple behind me...or in front of me...i don't quite remember. Anyway...turns out that this couple was relatives of one of the guitarists (who is no longer with the band). Post show, we were invited by the couple to go backstage. That was pretty cool. Talked with the guitarist for about 45 minutes and briefly chatted with other members of the band. That was my one and only visit backstage to a professional show. I've been "backstage" at Finding Reason shows...and Less Than Serious Shows...

10,000 Miles

This past weekend Delilah turned 10,000 miles. I've almost had her for a year now...just over 11 months. Ten thousand miles is a little more than i typically put on a vehicle in a given year...but Delilah is so much fun to drive.

The other neat thing is that in that 11+ months and 10,000 miles, i have only seen at most 3 other Infiniti EX35s in the area. And i think one of them was a loaner. I always like to be a little different and a little unique...Delilah was definitely the car for me.

Movie Theater Etiquette

I don't go to the movies that often anymore...mainly because i refuse to watch a movie by myself. I've been lucky to see two movies over the last week and a half. And both times, i've witnessed (and been highly annoyed with) rude movie goers.
Last week, with a nearly empty theater, this woman sat right next to me. That was annoying enough...but she decided to add her commentary for her husband (he was forced to be there). And this lady was using her at-home-with-just-the-hubby-shouting-at-the-tv-voice. Ok, so she wasn't shouting, but she wasn't whispering either. And she was the one that has to laugh louder than any other person in the theater...and well, there wasn't really any funny parts...it was a serious film...

Today...with the weather being less than ideal for any true outdoor activities, another movie was in the works. DON'T TEXT DURING THE MOVIE!!! Seriously, folks, the bright crackberry or cell phone screen is quite annoying. You aren't doing a very good job of hiding the phone in your lap. If i weren't in such a good mood, i would've said something to you.

I really don't miss the movie theater...especially if people are going to be rude. Stupid Americans.

2009 Aramco Houston Half Marathon Recap

Now, that i've had some sleep and am a bit rested, i'll recap the events of yesterday.

The morning started at 4:30am with the alarms screaming to wake up. Of course, i was in the paranoid light sleep mode (cause i didn't want to be late). That means i really didn't get much sleep. I picked up my running partner and we were off to downtown at by about 5:10am. I think i was more concerned with the logistics of getting there and finding parking than i was the actual run. But it turns out that traffic was not that bad and parking was easy to find. After all, there were approximately 25000 runners converging on one location.

We made our way into the runners staging area, checked in a goodie bag and had a bite to eat. Then it was time to start heading out to the corral location. We started lining up around 6:15am or so. We would not start the race until 7:10am. While the temperatures were mild by some standards, it was a little chilly just standing around. However, with thousands of people huddling around, it was tolerable. But, boy, do i hate crowds!

At 7:10am, the gun went bang and we were off. Luckily we near the front of the line, so we started moving pretty fast. I had heard horror stories of a lot of people dodging at the beginning...and there was some of that, but not nearly as much as i had anticipated. So that was good.

I was a bit concerned when my shins started barking early on...before we even hit the 1 mile mark. I immediately started wondering if i was going to make it the whole way...as i had never had any shin pain in all of my training runs. We kept pressing and somewhere around mile 3 or 4, the shin pain subsided.

I will say that the experience was one that i probably won't forget. The marathon spectators that lined the streets of Houston were just awesome. They were the ones that made the whole experience less painful. It was also great to see some of our friends on the sidelines. Every once in a while, you'd get someone calling your name with words of encouragement. And every time it brought a smile to your face. My running partner definitely got more attention than i did, but that's because she's pretty.

And, I must say that my running partner is awesome! She came down with an illness around mid-week. She wasn't even sure if she'd be able to make it. But somehow she found a way to not only finish the race, but finish with a rather good pace. That's my 'Iron Goddess'. We ran a faster pace than we have done in all of our training.

Unfortunately, we weren't able to enjoy our finish as much as we would've liked. As we came down the home stretch the crowd got really loud. Little did we know that coming up behind us was the finisher of the women's marathon. As we neared our finish line, we turned our heads to watch the woman break the Houston women's marathon record. And by the time that was all over, we had crossed our finish line. But it was a good feeling to finish. And honestly, i could've kept going. I still had gas in the tank.

At the finish we were able given our medals for our 13.1 miles of hard work. We then got our finisher t-shirts (which are a good quality shirt). We collected our things and met some of our friends in the reunion area (thanks for being there, Melissa G., Melissa W., Lisa, and Josh.)

Also a big congratulations goes out to the other participants of the 5K, half marathon, and marathon. Some of my friends and co-workers participated. Congrats to Nujoud for completing her first marathon. Congrats to Charlie, Nat, Tarik, and Erin S. for running the half marathon. And congrats to Melissa G., Josh, and Kevin for running the 5K. I'm sure there are others that i may have forgotten or didn't know about...but you all did great!

So, there you have it. The epic story of the first Half Marathon. I suppose when i say first that that implies there must be a second or a third. Um...possibly. As long as my running partner wants to run, then i'll be running.

2009 Aramco Houston Half Marathon

This morning, my running partner and I completed the 2009 Aramco Houston Half Marathon. I finished in 2:14:16. I'm quite tired and will follow up with more words later.

Horelica House of Music -- DVD Edition

I trust all of you are settled in to the new year...ready for new adventure, ready to clean old habits, and ready to live.

This edition of HHoM is what i call the DVD edition. The following two artists have made the HHoM list before. One of them is making their 4th appearance. The other is making his second appearance.




Oh yes, the Smashing Pumpkins. It's no secret by now that i'm quite a fan. This particular DVD recounts the reforming of the band. There is a documentary DVD and then a performance DVD. I'm particularly blown away by the 34 minute epic song, Gossamer. This monster of a song is flavored with a good portion of Pink Floyd. With the heavy Pumpkins sound...some unbelievable solos...and a catchy bass line, it's hard not to like. The Pumpkins make me happy.



Mr. David Bowie, making his second trip to HHoM, is still rockin'. I was privileged enough to see this tour live and seeing the DVD brings me back to that performance. Perhaps the best performance i've ever seen. Great stuff.

I'm always so motivated to try to get in the studio to make my own music, but other things seem to get in the way after watching these DVDs.

And such is life, i must now get ready for work.

Rock on...
